When Kelsey Sloan ’16 arrived at the Lancaster Marriott for the High Center Family Business Forum this past March, she had no idea that her life would change as a result of her attendance.
While finishing her senior year in the Department of Business, she was provided with an opportunity to attend the forum and network with Elizabethtown College alumni, friends and members of the local Lancaster business community. It was here that Sloan met Board of Trustees member David Hosler ’72 H’10. As the event concluded, Hosler handed his business card to Sloan with an invitation to contact him if she wanted to continue their conversation.
Sloan took the initiative, reached out to Hosler and, after phone conversations, in-person meetings and an interview, landed her very first job as a benefits communications specialist at Hosler’s company, Murray Securus.
The manner in which things came together for Sloan is an example of how powerful networking can be. Sloan remarked, “You never know who you will meet, and it is so important to put yourself out there. It might sound cliché, but take advantage of networking opportunities, and do not be afraid to talk with new people.”
Wise advice, especially if you happen to be networking with a fellow Blue Jay.
